What's Outalot?
Outalot is a city guide service that makes it easy for you to find places of interest, like restaurants, bars, shops, and movie theaters near your current location. Available either on your desktop or on your mobile phone, you'll always know where to go next when using Outalot.
Seed Wireless, the company behind Outalot, launched the service in March 2008.
What cities does Outalot cover?
Outalot is available in New York City and the San Francisco Bay Area for now, but we plan on supporting additional cities soon.
Using Outalot on your mobile phone
Outalot is compatible with most Internet browsers on mobile phones. Simply enter the URL outalot.com. If you get the desktop version of the site, which you'll know because it's either taking forever to reach our site or your phone's browser crashed, try entering wap.outalot.com instead. And if you have an Apple iPhone, you're in for a treat because Outalot looks especially slick on it.
Please check with your wireless carrier to see how much they're charging you for data access. While most people we know purchase unlimited data rate plans, you might subscribe to on one of those plans that charges you per kilobyte or caps your usage. Internet access can get mightly painful quickly on those plans.
Setting your location
Look at the top of this page. You'll see a red teardrop-shaped pushpin. You set your location by clicking the link next to this icon (it'll say something like by Union Square) and then picking a new location by ZIP-Code, Address, Intersection, or Neighborhood. At the moment we only provide a limited set of neighborhoods for NYC and the SF Bay area, but we'll be adding more cities and neighborhoods as we grow.
In many cases, you can simply enter an address, intersection or even a landmark and we'll figure out what location you're in. If you're having trouble setting your location, try entering it in this format: "Address, City, State".
We plan on supporting GPS-enabled phones soon, but until then, you'll need to tell us where you are by selecting "Change Location" when you use Outalot on your mobile phone.
Browsing Food, Bars, Shops, and Movies
It's pretty simple to use Outalot. Just tell us where you are, then select a section of our site to browse (Food, Bars, Movies, Shops). You don't need to create an account in order to browse the site, but it gets much more interesting for you and your friends if you create an account. And here's why....
Bookmarks
When you create an account on Outalot, we create a special URL just for you that you can share with your friends. The format of this URL is simple. We use that word simple a lot. Because we believe that simple is best. Your bookmarks URL will be
www.outalot.com/users/[your username].
For example, a user who signed up under username "britneyspears" would
have the URL www.outalot.com/users/britneyspears. We don't think she's using our service right now, so her username may be available, but you'd violate our terms of use if you try to use her name... Unless your real name is really Britney Spears, too.
Managing your bookmarks, ratings, comments, and tags
To add a listing as a bookmark, please log in to your account, find the listing you'd like to bookmark, and click on the
next to the listing. It'll then show up under your Outalot bookmarks.
If you'd like to rate a listing, click the large
or
.
If you add tags or comments, please remember that we take our terms of use seriously and will wipe away any comments that are threatening, bigoted, or unnecessarily vicious.
How to correct listings and submit new ones
If you find something wrong with a business listing (for example, we have the wrong address, phone number, or the business has shut down) please let us know about it. We display a link next to each business listing that reads "Correct this Listing". Please click on this in order to tell us about what's wrong with the listing.
You can also submit a business if we've just flat-out missed it entirely. There's a link in the footer "Submit Listing". Just click on it and tell us what we've missed.
Other comments, feedback, or concerns
Please let us know what you think of our service, or if you have concerns about a specific aspect of Outalot. You can either click "Feedback" in the footer and then fill in the short form that appears, or you can send us an email at .
